Every so often I come across a business that seriously makes my day. Having decided to go to Brighton early one morning just to check out Jetty Road’s offerings, I discovered this awesome cafe along a strip that has several others. This place is fresh and friendly  – the decor is minimalist and totally in keeping with the overall healthy vibe that is the heart beat of this cafe.

There is a small offering of SA produce on floating shelves and the menu items are all healthy with lots of vegan options. I was impressed with the genuine friendliness of Tom, the owner. This is a man who understands customer service and why it matters!

If you are near Brighton, this place deserves your attention and a drive to Brighton just to check out The Sellar Door would not disappoint. The beach is beautiful, the jetty long and appealing and you could easily go to this great little cafe both before and after a stroll on the jetty, a run on the beach, or a swim in the ocean.

Be sure to check it out! A fabulous addition to Jetty Road, Brighton.

Pollen185 is a meat-free eatery specialising in wholesome, local vegan and vegetarian food. The first thing that you notice when stepping into the premises is the fresh decor – no shabby retro here but a fresh funky look that works well in this small space. The service was immediate and having the order taken at the table was a great change – as was not having to pay until the meal was finished. There are some novel features such as the bookshelf that you can pick from to read while you’re there; and the collection of driftwood from various global localities – a tactile delight.

The food as fresh and modern. The chia bowl was delicious and contained fresh fruit which was in season and ripe. The coffee is excellent quality and in particular the chai latte served with house made almond milk and served in a Turkish coffee pot was a delicious end to this wholesome breakfast.

Pollen185 is open some nights as well -definitely have to return to check this out. An awesome little gem in this part of Adelaide. Close to the CBD; easy parking and well worth a visit.

The first thing that struck me about this café in Clarence Gardens was the service. It was so refreshing to be greeted in a way that made me feel welcome. Also I did not need to tell the counter staff that I had not been there before because she asked me first and then proceeded to explain the many menu options. 10 out of 10 for service. I have read other reviews regarding the lack of service at Sublime but I can definitely say that it was very good on the day I was there.

The meal was served quickly and although it was not busy when I was there, I had the feeling that the kitchen has good systems and is well-organised.

The food offers healthy, vegan and organic options much the same as other cafés in this genre and on first glance, seem rather on the expensive side compared to other places. However, the haloumi served with pesto scrambled eggs was a very generous size and was good value for money. Many places serve microscopic meals for quite high prices and this was not the case here. I can’t say that it was the best food I have had in a similar cafés but it was not the worst either. It came out hot and was pleasant to eat. The coffee was a little on the ordinary side – I had a large size latte and it did seem a bit weak although perfectly drinkable.

The decor at Sublime was fresh and modern. It makes a pleasant change from the shabby retro/chic look that has been overdone in many of Adelaide’s cafés. It is good to see that some owners are quite happy not to follow this look – it seems cleaner and fresher anyway and this place was light and airy because of this, and also the many windows that were spotlessly clean.

Sublime is on a busy road that runs through to Cross Road and is easy to find. It is right next door to East Terrace Book Shop. If you like books, spend some time in there as well. The owner is friendly, knowledgeable and very happy for you to be in her shop browsing.

Summary: Food good quality, value for money, generous serves; service  – friendly, efficient and welcoming; location – easy parking on East Terrace or the side streets – you won’t have any trouble finding a place to park regardless of when you choose to go there. Worth a try? Yes – an honest café with good service. Give it a try and don’t forget the bookshop!

Rosey’s Unley

Fritters and salmon.jpg139 Unley Rd, Unley SA 5061 | Phone: (08) 7225 0690 |
Open every day 0800 – 1600 | Find them on Facebook

Rosey’s has been on Unley Road for several years probably because it offers consistent service and quality food. Although you can get a table during the week, it always pays to book on the weekends. There is seating inside the little shop where there are hanging bottles and minimalist décor, and also in the brick paved courtyard. This is a pleasant area even on a cold day when the blinds are pulled down and the heaters on to give cozy feel.

The food is fairly standard but well cooked and presented. A personal favourite is the fritters with salmon, and the French toast is also delicious. Coffee is consistently good with no variation from visit to visit – another reason to go back as you know what you are going to get. Continue reading

Red House Shop & Café

North Adelaide Railway Station, War Memorial Dr, North Adelaide SA 5006 |
Phone: 0414 184 166 | Open every day 0730 – 1600 | Find them on Facebook

This cafe is on War Memorial Drive near the golf course and on the bike/walking track. It is in the old North Adelaide railway station building so overall it has a great location. I was interested to know what the shop was rather than the food so decided to stop there about an hour before closing on a weekday.
The staff were very friendly and were happy to show me through the building (the cafe wasn’t busy) and into what had been the station master’s house – where the shop is now located. This shop is a retro/vintage collection and is in a small room off the passageway. It is well stocked and presented in such a small space and for those into that type of thing you would be sure to find something. Continue reading

Great little find on East Terrace. This little café offers healthy food with vegan options. Breakfast from until 11:30 am and lunch from 11:30 am but as we were there at a reasonably quiet time, the chef let us order from both menus – very obliging. The food was great – pumpkin pizza, blueberry pancakes, freshly made juices and first class coffee; and the staff that you can see here were absolutely perfect!

Parking nearby is easy to find – 1 hour, 3 and 10 hours. You have to pay for it but it’s worth it. You can find 2 hour parks on Hutt Street and the short walk past Rymill Park is easy.
