Topiary Cafe

Newman’s Nursery 1361 N E Rd, Tea Tree Gully SA 5091 | Phone (08) 8263 0818
Open Monday to Sunday 9am-4pm and Saturday 6.30-11pm | Website

Located at the front of Newman’s Nursery on  North East Road, this garden cafe is beautifully presented. There is seating inside and also outside on the verandah. I would recommend that you book no matter what day or time you are intending to go as they are always quite busy. The staff are friendly and accommodating although occasionally will forget that you have asked for the menu or that you want to order something else. However, overall the service is good which is important considering that this cafe is not cheap.
The food is good quality and made with fresh local produce. The serves are quite small and the extras can make a basic dish quite expensive. Iced coffees cost $8.50 and two poached eggs with avocado is $14. Two scones were $8 but if you want to add their house made jam an additional $2 is charged. The gardener’s breakfast shown in the photo is tasty – again not a huge serve for $18. On a 40 degree day, iced table water would have been appreciated rather than water served at room temperature.
Having said all that, breakfast at Topiary was an enjoyable experience. The decor is fresh and very much in keeping with the garden theme and Newman’s is a top class nursery. The meal was excellent in terms of quality, even if a little on the small size. However, you are paying to eat in a place that is relaxed, spotlessly clean and not noisy, and where the service for the most part is great. I felt the experience justified the cost of the dishes.
Summary: garden cafe in an easy to find location with ample parking right out the front – plenty of shade on a hot day. Pleasant decor that was clean and minimalist. Food good quality and made with local produce. Worth a try? Yes – be sure to book ahead and do not expect this to be a cheap eats option.

The Barker Hotel underwent a major refurbishment a few years back and when it reopened it had been completely renovated offering chic decor, a large restaurant, a roomy front bar and a gaming room. Despite this, things weren’t great after the re-opening and there were many occasions when local people were very dissatisfied with the food and the service. The reopening had been a long time coming and when it happened patrons felt very let down.

I am pleased to say that those days seem to be gone and the Barker has become a  jewel in the crown of this rapidly growing centre in the Adelaide Hills. An evening spent there in December 2016 was a very positive experience right from the moment we approached the bar in the restaurant area. The staff member was friendly and welcoming. We were undecided about eating there so she told us they only had one table left in the restaurant area and encouraged us to take it just in case we did decide to eat. A good start to what ended up being a great experience.

The food was very good quality – served quickly, and well presented and tasty.  Meals were priced between $18 and $29 and were very good value especially considering the size and quality of every dish.

Summary: Customer service spot on; food excellent quality, generous serves and well-priced; large airy restaurant with tables and booths providing a pleasant environment as well as outside seating well protected dining. Worth a try? Absolutely! I will make the trip up the freeway to go again in the future.

Pollen185 is a meat-free eatery specialising in wholesome, local vegan and vegetarian food. The first thing that you notice when stepping into the premises is the fresh decor – no shabby retro here but a fresh funky look that works well in this small space. The service was immediate and having the order taken at the table was a great change – as was not having to pay until the meal was finished. There are some novel features such as the bookshelf that you can pick from to read while you’re there; and the collection of driftwood from various global localities – a tactile delight.

The food as fresh and modern. The chia bowl was delicious and contained fresh fruit which was in season and ripe. The coffee is excellent quality and in particular the chai latte served with house made almond milk and served in a Turkish coffee pot was a delicious end to this wholesome breakfast.

Pollen185 is open some nights as well -definitely have to return to check this out. An awesome little gem in this part of Adelaide. Close to the CBD; easy parking and well worth a visit.

Mai Kitchen – Vietnamese Restaurant

Open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 11am – 3pm & 5-9pm; Saturday 10am – 9pm | Website

Mai Kitchen is a large restaurant in the back streets of Ferryden Park. On the night that we were there, I would estimate that there were about 150 people there. The acoustics of the building are obviously good as despite the number of people, it was still possible to hear – a definite plus!
We went there for the vegan options and there are many quality and varied choices. We chose spring rolls, rice noodle stir fry, lemon grass chili, sizzling vegan beef, and vegan fried rice. All dishes were generous size, great quality, and beautifully presented. Including drinks, we paid about $30 per head – great value for money.
The service is friendly and welcoming.  We we able to place our order quite quickly and there was a very short wait to be served the food. Unfortunately, there was no follow up service at all, and we had to go to the counter to ask for more bottles of water, drinks, and the menu to see if wanted to order anything else. While it was busy, there were plenty of staff and more attention to detail in customer service would have been appreciated.
Summary: food excellent; service good but could be better; value for money excellent. Worth a try? Absolutely – if you like Vietnamese food, you should enjoy the Mai’s experience.
