Do you love chocolate? Then you will love this is a wonderful little chocolate shop and dessert cafe on the Rundle Mall end of Adelaide Arcade. Beautifully presented chocolates fill the display cabinets at the front of the shop and then there is the cafe area with a lounge area upstairs.

The menu is sumptuous offering many chocolate based and gourmet sandwich options. The service was exquisite – probably the best I have had anywhere for a long time. The staff in both the shop and the cafe were proactive, offering choices from the menu and explaining the options in the chocolates in the shop.

Summary: a boutique chocolate shop that adds to the Rundle Mall experience. Service top class. Food is delicious and beautifully presented. A wonderful bowl of vanilla icecream served with caramel and chipped toffee was an indulgence and great value. Worth a try? Oh yes, even if you are not a chocolate lover you will find something on the menu to enjoy while your indulgent dining partner revels in chocolate.

Topiary Cafe

Newman’s Nursery 1361 N E Rd, Tea Tree Gully SA 5091 | Phone (08) 8263 0818
Open Monday to Sunday 9am-4pm and Saturday 6.30-11pm | Website

Located at the front of Newman’s Nursery on  North East Road, this garden cafe is beautifully presented. There is seating inside and also outside on the verandah. I would recommend that you book no matter what day or time you are intending to go as they are always quite busy. The staff are friendly and accommodating although occasionally will forget that you have asked for the menu or that you want to order something else. However, overall the service is good which is important considering that this cafe is not cheap.
The food is good quality and made with fresh local produce. The serves are quite small and the extras can make a basic dish quite expensive. Iced coffees cost $8.50 and two poached eggs with avocado is $14. Two scones were $8 but if you want to add their house made jam an additional $2 is charged. The gardener’s breakfast shown in the photo is tasty – again not a huge serve for $18. On a 40 degree day, iced table water would have been appreciated rather than water served at room temperature.
Having said all that, breakfast at Topiary was an enjoyable experience. The decor is fresh and very much in keeping with the garden theme and Newman’s is a top class nursery. The meal was excellent in terms of quality, even if a little on the small size. However, you are paying to eat in a place that is relaxed, spotlessly clean and not noisy, and where the service for the most part is great. I felt the experience justified the cost of the dishes.
Summary: garden cafe in an easy to find location with ample parking right out the front – plenty of shade on a hot day. Pleasant decor that was clean and minimalist. Food good quality and made with local produce. Worth a try? Yes – be sure to book ahead and do not expect this to be a cheap eats option.

Pollen185 is a meat-free eatery specialising in wholesome, local vegan and vegetarian food. The first thing that you notice when stepping into the premises is the fresh decor – no shabby retro here but a fresh funky look that works well in this small space. The service was immediate and having the order taken at the table was a great change – as was not having to pay until the meal was finished. There are some novel features such as the bookshelf that you can pick from to read while you’re there; and the collection of driftwood from various global localities – a tactile delight.

The food as fresh and modern. The chia bowl was delicious and contained fresh fruit which was in season and ripe. The coffee is excellent quality and in particular the chai latte served with house made almond milk and served in a Turkish coffee pot was a delicious end to this wholesome breakfast.

Pollen185 is open some nights as well -definitely have to return to check this out. An awesome little gem in this part of Adelaide. Close to the CBD; easy parking and well worth a visit.

The first thing that struck me about this café in Clarence Gardens was the service. It was so refreshing to be greeted in a way that made me feel welcome. Also I did not need to tell the counter staff that I had not been there before because she asked me first and then proceeded to explain the many menu options. 10 out of 10 for service. I have read other reviews regarding the lack of service at Sublime but I can definitely say that it was very good on the day I was there.

The meal was served quickly and although it was not busy when I was there, I had the feeling that the kitchen has good systems and is well-organised.

The food offers healthy, vegan and organic options much the same as other cafés in this genre and on first glance, seem rather on the expensive side compared to other places. However, the haloumi served with pesto scrambled eggs was a very generous size and was good value for money. Many places serve microscopic meals for quite high prices and this was not the case here. I can’t say that it was the best food I have had in a similar cafés but it was not the worst either. It came out hot and was pleasant to eat. The coffee was a little on the ordinary side – I had a large size latte and it did seem a bit weak although perfectly drinkable.

The decor at Sublime was fresh and modern. It makes a pleasant change from the shabby retro/chic look that has been overdone in many of Adelaide’s cafés. It is good to see that some owners are quite happy not to follow this look – it seems cleaner and fresher anyway and this place was light and airy because of this, and also the many windows that were spotlessly clean.

Sublime is on a busy road that runs through to Cross Road and is easy to find. It is right next door to East Terrace Book Shop. If you like books, spend some time in there as well. The owner is friendly, knowledgeable and very happy for you to be in her shop browsing.

Summary: Food good quality, value for money, generous serves; service  – friendly, efficient and welcoming; location – easy parking on East Terrace or the side streets – you won’t have any trouble finding a place to park regardless of when you choose to go there. Worth a try? Yes – an honest café with good service. Give it a try and don’t forget the bookshop!
