Eating overlooking the sea seems to have almost universal appeal and the views from Grange Jetty Café are fantastic. An uninterrupted view of the jetty and the beach makes this place very appealing. The café offers a range of food with an emphasis on pizzas and pasta and the type of food that you would expect near the sea – like fish and chips. The food is good quality – the only thing perhaps lacking is that there are not a lot of vegan/vegetarian options.
Plenty of seating inside and out – it can get windy some days so having both options is a plus. Good options for snacks and mid-afternoon coffees and the hours make this a great choice to have breakfast/brunch/early dinner by the sea. Takeaway options as well.

Every so often I come across a business that seriously makes my day. Having decided to go to Brighton early one morning just to check out Jetty Road’s offerings, I discovered this awesome cafe along a strip that has several others. This place is fresh and friendly  – the decor is minimalist and totally in keeping with the overall healthy vibe that is the heart beat of this cafe.

There is a small offering of SA produce on floating shelves and the menu items are all healthy with lots of vegan options. I was impressed with the genuine friendliness of Tom, the owner. This is a man who understands customer service and why it matters!

If you are near Brighton, this place deserves your attention and a drive to Brighton just to check out The Sellar Door would not disappoint. The beach is beautiful, the jetty long and appealing and you could easily go to this great little cafe both before and after a stroll on the jetty, a run on the beach, or a swim in the ocean.

Be sure to check it out! A fabulous addition to Jetty Road, Brighton.

Great location on Henley Beach Road only minutes from the CBD and close to the Airport. Art decor style renovated pub with a fresh ambiance, great service, pizzas and pub meals, as well as a bsitro offering good quality meals at great prices.
I don’t go to pubs a great deal and the experience of the Hotel Royal was very positive. Clean modern interior with plenty of casual seating in the bar area next to the Bistro. Right from the start the service was spot on with a friendly greeting, explanation about the menu if we were interested in eating there, and the offer of ice cold water – wonderful on a 40 degree day!

Caesar salad

We chose to order in the bar, and the lamb salad and Caesar salad were both fresh and good size serves – excellent value for money. The area overlooking Henley Beach Road was relaxing with a choice of stools or bucket lounge seats and the volume of the cricket and the music was just right. A very pleasant experience overall.
Summary: Excellent customer service – many could learn from the staff member who served us!. Food was fresh, served quickly and at $18 were good value. Great menu choices including burgers, pizzas and standards like fish and steak just to name a few. Easy parking in Jervois Street or at the back of the Hotel. An unpretentious place with a lot to offer. Worth a try? Absolutely – even if hotels are not what you might normally consider this one is worth a go.

Do you love chocolate? Then you will love this is a wonderful little chocolate shop and dessert cafe on the Rundle Mall end of Adelaide Arcade. Beautifully presented chocolates fill the display cabinets at the front of the shop and then there is the cafe area with a lounge area upstairs.

The menu is sumptuous offering many chocolate based and gourmet sandwich options. The service was exquisite – probably the best I have had anywhere for a long time. The staff in both the shop and the cafe were proactive, offering choices from the menu and explaining the options in the chocolates in the shop.

Summary: a boutique chocolate shop that adds to the Rundle Mall experience. Service top class. Food is delicious and beautifully presented. A wonderful bowl of vanilla icecream served with caramel and chipped toffee was an indulgence and great value. Worth a try? Oh yes, even if you are not a chocolate lover you will find something on the menu to enjoy while your indulgent dining partner revels in chocolate.

Topiary Cafe

Newman’s Nursery 1361 N E Rd, Tea Tree Gully SA 5091 | Phone (08) 8263 0818
Open Monday to Sunday 9am-4pm and Saturday 6.30-11pm | Website

Located at the front of Newman’s Nursery on  North East Road, this garden cafe is beautifully presented. There is seating inside and also outside on the verandah. I would recommend that you book no matter what day or time you are intending to go as they are always quite busy. The staff are friendly and accommodating although occasionally will forget that you have asked for the menu or that you want to order something else. However, overall the service is good which is important considering that this cafe is not cheap.
The food is good quality and made with fresh local produce. The serves are quite small and the extras can make a basic dish quite expensive. Iced coffees cost $8.50 and two poached eggs with avocado is $14. Two scones were $8 but if you want to add their house made jam an additional $2 is charged. The gardener’s breakfast shown in the photo is tasty – again not a huge serve for $18. On a 40 degree day, iced table water would have been appreciated rather than water served at room temperature.
Having said all that, breakfast at Topiary was an enjoyable experience. The decor is fresh and very much in keeping with the garden theme and Newman’s is a top class nursery. The meal was excellent in terms of quality, even if a little on the small size. However, you are paying to eat in a place that is relaxed, spotlessly clean and not noisy, and where the service for the most part is great. I felt the experience justified the cost of the dishes.
Summary: garden cafe in an easy to find location with ample parking right out the front – plenty of shade on a hot day. Pleasant decor that was clean and minimalist. Food good quality and made with local produce. Worth a try? Yes – be sure to book ahead and do not expect this to be a cheap eats option.

63A Broadway GLENELG SA 5045 | Phone: (08) 8294 3398
Open Tuesday – Friday 9am – 5pm; Saturday & Sunday 10am – 5pm | Website

Mockingbird Lounge is a quality secondhand bookshop first and foremost. It also hosts book clubs, writers’ workshops and art events. Apart from books, Mockingbird Lounge also has a big range of interesting handcrafted quality gifts for all ages. Then, at the front there is a small cafe offering a limited menu of house-made snacks and small meals. The main appeal of this place is the ambiance and concept – if you love books you will love Mockingbird. It is not offering artisan, trendy food but the coffee is good and the light snacks are tasty.

The business is in what would have once been a shop with the residence behind. There is also an outside sitting area which leads to a former granny flat which now provides a private room for book club meetings and workshop.

The owners take full advantage of this great premises, filling the rooms with bookshelves of quality books and old furniture that invites you to sit down and stay a while. It’s a bit like being in a friend’s house – a friend who has an extensive library and enjoys quality art and craft.

There is a huge range of books in many genres – a lot of recent best sellers can be found for a fraction of the retail price – and there is a very good offering of children’s and young adult literature as well.

The menu in the cafe at the front is limited to a few light dishes like croissants, home-made sausage rolls, and scones, for example. There is plenty to choose from if you are there to have a light snack while enjoying the opportunity to sit and catch up with friends, or read in a relaxed hassle-free place.

If you love books and taking your time without being pressured, and enjoy supporting local artists who produce quality work for exhibition or sale, or want to join a book club, or just want a place to chill out and enjoy a good coffee, give Mockingbird Lounge on Broadway at Glenelg a try.

Pollen185 is a meat-free eatery specialising in wholesome, local vegan and vegetarian food. The first thing that you notice when stepping into the premises is the fresh decor – no shabby retro here but a fresh funky look that works well in this small space. The service was immediate and having the order taken at the table was a great change – as was not having to pay until the meal was finished. There are some novel features such as the bookshelf that you can pick from to read while you’re there; and the collection of driftwood from various global localities – a tactile delight.

The food as fresh and modern. The chia bowl was delicious and contained fresh fruit which was in season and ripe. The coffee is excellent quality and in particular the chai latte served with house made almond milk and served in a Turkish coffee pot was a delicious end to this wholesome breakfast.

Pollen185 is open some nights as well -definitely have to return to check this out. An awesome little gem in this part of Adelaide. Close to the CBD; easy parking and well worth a visit.
