Open Tuesday – Friday 9am – 5pm; Saturday & Sunday 10am – 5pm | Website

Mockingbird Lounge is a quality secondhand bookshop first and foremost. It also hosts book clubs, writers’ workshops and art events. Apart from books, Mockingbird Lounge also has a big range of interesting handcrafted quality gifts for all ages. Then, at the front there is a small cafe offering a limited menu of house-made snacks and small meals. The main appeal of this place is the ambiance and concept – if you love books you will love Mockingbird. It is not offering artisan, trendy food but the coffee is good and the light snacks are tasty.

The business is in what would have once been a shop with the residence behind. There is also an outside sitting area which leads to a former granny flat which now provides a private room for book club meetings and workshop.

The owners take full advantage of this great premises, filling the rooms with bookshelves of quality books and old furniture that invites you to sit down and stay a while. It’s a bit like being in a friend’s house – a friend who has an extensive library and enjoys quality art and craft.

There is a huge range of books in many genres – a lot of recent best sellers can be found for a fraction of the retail price – and there is a very good offering of children’s and young adult literature as well.

The menu in the cafe at the front is limited to a few light dishes like croissants, home-made sausage rolls, and scones, for example. There is plenty to choose from if you are there to have a light snack while enjoying the opportunity to sit and catch up with friends, or read in a relaxed hassle-free place.

If you love books and taking your time without being pressured, and enjoy supporting local artists who produce quality work for exhibition or sale, or want to join a book club, or just want a place to chill out and enjoy a good coffee, give Mockingbird Lounge on Broadway at Glenelg a try.

Pollen185 is a meat-free eatery specialising in wholesome, local vegan and vegetarian food. The first thing that you notice when stepping into the premises is the fresh decor – no shabby retro here but a fresh funky look that works well in this small space. The service was immediate and having the order taken at the table was a great change – as was not having to pay until the meal was finished. There are some novel features such as the bookshelf that you can pick from to read while you’re there; and the collection of driftwood from various global localities – a tactile delight.

The food as fresh and modern. The chia bowl was delicious and contained fresh fruit which was in season and ripe. The coffee is excellent quality and in particular the chai latte served with house made almond milk and served in a Turkish coffee pot was a delicious end to this wholesome breakfast.

Pollen185 is open some nights as well -definitely have to return to check this out. An awesome little gem in this part of Adelaide. Close to the CBD; easy parking and well worth a visit.

The first thing that struck me about this café in Clarence Gardens was the service. It was so refreshing to be greeted in a way that made me feel welcome. Also I did not need to tell the counter staff that I had not been there before because she asked me first and then proceeded to explain the many menu options. 10 out of 10 for service. I have read other reviews regarding the lack of service at Sublime but I can definitely say that it was very good on the day I was there.

The meal was served quickly and although it was not busy when I was there, I had the feeling that the kitchen has good systems and is well-organised.

The food offers healthy, vegan and organic options much the same as other cafés in this genre and on first glance, seem rather on the expensive side compared to other places. However, the haloumi served with pesto scrambled eggs was a very generous size and was good value for money. Many places serve microscopic meals for quite high prices and this was not the case here. I can’t say that it was the best food I have had in a similar cafés but it was not the worst either. It came out hot and was pleasant to eat. The coffee was a little on the ordinary side – I had a large size latte and it did seem a bit weak although perfectly drinkable.

The decor at Sublime was fresh and modern. It makes a pleasant change from the shabby retro/chic look that has been overdone in many of Adelaide’s cafés. It is good to see that some owners are quite happy not to follow this look – it seems cleaner and fresher anyway and this place was light and airy because of this, and also the many windows that were spotlessly clean.

Sublime is on a busy road that runs through to Cross Road and is easy to find. It is right next door to East Terrace Book Shop. If you like books, spend some time in there as well. The owner is friendly, knowledgeable and very happy for you to be in her shop browsing.

Summary: Food good quality, value for money, generous serves; service  – friendly, efficient and welcoming; location – easy parking on East Terrace or the side streets – you won’t have any trouble finding a place to park regardless of when you choose to go there. Worth a try? Yes – an honest café with good service. Give it a try and don’t forget the bookshop!

Open Monday – Friday 07:30 – 16:00; Saturday 08:30 – 14:00

Fawn Coffee is a wonderful little gem tucked away in Adelaide’s southern corner – a short walk from Hutt Street. It is in an old corner shop and has been fitted out in a fresh light way – a great change from the shabby retro look that is so popular in many popular cafés. This little business seems to get everything spot on – the decor really pulls you in through the front door and once you are in there, the greeting and service is brilliant. There is something simple about Fawn – and that is what is so great about it.

The food is contemporary and healthy and will appeal to all those who like great food in a relaxed, calm setting. The attention to detail is stunning – not just in the food and customer service but also in the meticulously clean tables, pot plants and outdoor seating area. There is really nothing that you can say about Fawn Coffee that isn’t a positive.

If you live in Adelaide, give it a try soon. If you are visiting, check out Fawn – it is in an historic corner of Adelaide so you can take a walk around this surprisingly intact part of the city and combine this experience with great food and great coffee.

Mai Kitchen – Vietnamese Restaurant

Mai Kitchen Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato

5/34 Wright St, Ferryden Park SA 5010 | Phone:(08) 7226 6591|
Open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday 11am – 3pm & 5-9pm; Saturday 10am – 9pm | Website

Mai Kitchen is a large restaurant in the back streets of Ferryden Park. On the night that we were there, I would estimate that there were about 150 people there. The acoustics of the building are obviously good as despite the number of people, it was still possible to hear – a definite plus!
We went there for the vegan options and there are many quality and varied choices. We chose spring rolls, rice noodle stir fry, lemon grass chili, sizzling vegan beef, and vegan fried rice. All dishes were generous size, great quality, and beautifully presented. Including drinks, we paid about $30 per head – great value for money.
The service is friendly and welcoming.  We we able to place our order quite quickly and there was a very short wait to be served the food. Unfortunately, there was no follow up service at all, and we had to go to the counter to ask for more bottles of water, drinks, and the menu to see if wanted to order anything else. While it was busy, there were plenty of staff and more attention to detail in customer service would have been appreciated.
Summary: food excellent; service good but could be better; value for money excellent. Worth a try? Absolutely – if you like Vietnamese food, you should enjoy the Mai’s experience.
