Cafe Komodo

I like this place because of the service. It was spot on from the moment I entered after an uncertain walk down the lane that runs off Prospect Road. You can never be sure what is at the end of a lane and once you have made the commitment there might be no going back! You can also enter from the back car park off Honeysuckle Lane but I didn’t know about that at the time so parked over the road in Kintore Avenue. The owner was very friendly and very happy to chat about his cafe and the menu; and the food and coffee arrived quite quickly – not a very long wait.
While Komodo may seem that it is like other retro places it has been there for a while – before others came on the scene using this type of now overdone decor. Komodo is at the back of shops on Prospect Road so it feels a bit like eating in a friend’s covered outside area –  who may not have noticed that  there are a few cobwebs.  The tables were clean, the toilet spotless, the glassware sparkling – so I got the impression that there was attention to detail in these important aspects.

The menu was varied and the prices fairly standard – for example, a generous size of waffles was $15. The food was well presented and the coffee a very good standard. The tea was leaf tea served in a teapot. The waffles were served with icecream and chocolate ganache – they were very sweet but they were supposed to be! The poached eggs were served with rye bread and spinach – the eggs were soft just as poached eggs should be.
Overall a pleasant experience set apart from some other cafes because of the friendly staff and good service. There are plenty of cafes on Prospect Road and this one shouldn’t be overlooked.

Summary: food tasty and well-presented; coffee good quality; service excellent; parking easy – either out the back or on or near Prospect Road. Worth a try? Yes – it’s relaxed with plenty of room and acoustics that mean you don’t have to shout to be heard. The owner is happy for you to spend some time there – either with friends or in a meeting and while he does not have power for laptops you are welcome to use yours there on battery.
